I read about a jewish poet, who when dragged away by the Nazis, was exclaiming “WRITE JEWS WRITE”. Through his craft he must have been convinced of the timeless power of the written word. Countless pages have been written outnumbering pages burned by the Nazis by the millions. These accounts are tireless reminders of not only the atrocities of the holocaust, but of loss. Tremendous individuals were stolen from the world, and with them their descendants that should be here with us. This memorial seeks to capture this idea. Here the multitudes of pages that document the realities of the holocaust are permanently enshrined. But in between the pages is an awareness of the people that are missing, that we will never have the chance to encounter.
